Jessica Nakamura Lecture

Attending Professor Nakamura's lecture was a great learning experience. My intention to go was to learn more about the Japanese culture while I try and create Japanese architecture. Her lecture focused on the performance of Yoshiko Shimada. She was performing "becoming a missing comfort woman" which in the times of war were prostitutes that were forced to service. Shimada did this performance to replicate the actual statue of the comfort woman that is stationed in certain parts of the world.
This was her main focus for most of the lecture as she was relating Shimada's work to be very interesting and eye opening to these comfort woman. Her work depicted a different way to look at  the statue if it was an older woman unlike the original which is portrayed by young girl. Her work did accomplish this as she later stated in the lecture that people started dressing up the original statues to sympathize for these woman's harsh times through the war. It was very eye opening to learn about his topic that I did not know existed. Also a good way to learn about other performance artists like Yoshiko Shimada and her involvement in Japanese history.
